Proper Care Of Broken Ceramic Tiles For Your Home Flooring Design

If you have a floor with ceramic tiles, you can cherish its beauty and elegance for many years. Though ceramic tiles can last for many decades, they are not indestructible. Chance of breakage and chipping spoils the look of the surface. But, the damaged tile is easily removed without causing damage to the surrounding tiles. These floors develop cracks if a heavy object falls on them with great force. And the crack accumulates dust and dirt. The look of the floor spoils with one broken or cracked tile. If the floor in question is in the kitchen, then there is a chance that even grease and oil gets accumulated. Cleaning such cracks is difficult and the only option left is to remove the tile and replace it with a new one.

Often, getting the same coloured ceramic tile is not possible. The colour and pattern may have been discontinued by the manufacturers. During the process of first installation, buying a few boxes more makes sense. Replacing the broken or chipped tiles with the same coloured or patterned one will not change the look of the floor. Do this process with finesse and skill. Do this on a leisurely day, when no other distractions are present. See that you allot some time for the removal and replacement. Locate the replacement tile in advance and clean it properly. Buy the necessary adhesive and grout, to match the replacing tile. Repair and replacement needs some skill. If you have saved tiles from earlier installation, then the replaced tile will merge smoothly with the rest of the floor.

To begin the process, find the necessary tools to remove the broken one. Start by cutting away the surrounding grout carefully around the damaged tile. Take ample time and do this process with precision. Sudden jerks or movements can cause the neighboring tiles to chip or crack. Once you remove the grout around the tile completely, use a cold chisel and a sledgehammer to lift the damaged one. You can also use a rotary tool with a cutting attachment to make an 'x' on the surface. Use small chiseling strokes to remove the ceramic tile in small pieces. This way you can easily remove the damaged tile. Take proper care while using the tools. Use protective gloves and goggles while working with the tools. Chips and bits of the ceramic tiles fly around and can cause damage to the eyes and hands. So experts recommend the use of protective gear while working.

Once, you remove the old tile; place the new one in that space. Apply grout according to the manufacturer's instructions around the joints of the new one. Putty knife is a good tool to use for this process. Remove any excess grout and wait for a few minutes. Use a damp sponge to remove the excesses. Place the ceramic tile in place of the old one and wait for 24 hours. Do not disturb the floor, during the drying process.

Wet Room Flooring: Designs and Types

Wet rooms are common in many parts of the country because of their attractive designs. It is a barrier free or water proof bathroom. People who have small houses and rooms find these units ideal because of their ability to save on space. People who want to add another bathroom in their homes can use these bathrooms because they cost much less than installing a complete bathroom. These wet room flooring types may increase a room's space, if some other bathroom fixtures such as wall mounted toilets and mounted showers, are added to the room. These fixtures can increase a room's aesthetic value if the right flooring is installed. There are several types of floors in the market that any person can choose from.

Granite tiles: These are the best choice for anyone with such a bathroom. This is because they come with an extra antibacterial surface. Granite slates are also extremely durable because of their hardened surface. Granite floors for
wet rooms require minimal sealing at the grout lines. They are also waterproof, making them ideal for such kinds of rooms.

Vinyl floors: These floors are also ideal for such rooms because of their durability and traction ability. The perfect traction ability of vinyl floors minimizes the risk of slips and falls. These floors are warm and make the bathing experience worthwhile. Their water proof qualities minimize the effects of leakages to the underlying surfaces. They are also less expensive than tiles.

Slate tiles: They have a high traction, thereby minimizing the chances of slipping and falling. These tiles need a lot of maintenance, so the owner may incur many costs in the end, though it provides superb quality
flooring.

Porcelain and ceramic tiles: These tiles have waterproof qualities and are inexpensive. They come in a wide variety of patterns and designs to choose from, enabling the owner to maximize on his interior designing.

With all the
wet room flooring options, there are some points to consider before installing any flooring and fixtures. First of all the floor level should be even. This will allow future users with disabilities or knee problems to have easier access to the room. Before purchasing any floor material, a buyer should consider the warranty period of the flooring material. This will allow a homeowner to have a refund in case of problems during installation. You should make sure that the shower tray is available in different sizes, so that people of various sizes can use it in the future. A buyer should make sure that he gets the right membrane to cover all the grout regions. Doing so will make sure that any future leaks are minimal or eliminated. Ensure that the tiling thickness corresponds with the drainage. A homeowner should also consider buying frameless shower doors, which enhance the room's beauty.

Five Flooring Design Tips

Tip #1: If you're laying tile flooring and want to make the room look bigger, use larger sized tiles (18 x 18 or larger) and lay them on a 45 degree angle (diamond pattern). What this does is draw your eye to the two widest points of each tile, giving your flooring the illusion of a larger space. And the larger sized tiles have less grout lines to look at so your flooring doesn't look as 'busy' across your a larger area as say a 12 x 12 would.

Just keep in mind installing tile on a 45 uses more tile because there are more cuts to be made.

Tip #2: If you want a clean, contemporary look, ask your installer to use the narrowest grout lines possible, either a 1/8 or 3/16 and for natural stone 1/16. Larger grout lines give a more rustic, earthy look. And higher gloss (polished) tiles are contemporary whereas heavily grooved and rough give an aged, worn look.

Tip #3: To give your flooring another illusionary trick, lighter colors give the room a more spacious feel while darker colors give it a cozier, smaller feel.

Tip #4: There are many flooring patterns available so don't hesitate to use them! Too many shoppers I met would obsess over what flooring everyone else is doing. This is your home, not anyone else's and you should get the floor that makes you happy. Don't be afraid of not looking like everyone else. That's the whole point! if you want to differentiate a room, then lay different flooring.

Tip #5: I'm a big fan of using matching or contrasting inserts to transform the flooring into a masterpiece. But not many really can create a room. You know, these deco pieces, listellos and natural stone inserts may cost you a couple hundred dollars all up but they give your room an unsurpassed look. Now I strongly recommend when doing these special flooring designs to only hire a certified flooring installer. DON'T TRY and do them yourself unless you really know what you're doing. I've seen it too many times.

For example, for every insert, you need to make 4 cuts, one for each connecting tile. These cuts need to be pretty much right on, otherwise any unevenness will flash at you right away once its installed. And if you insist on doing it yourself, just remember two very important words: wet saw and diamond blade!

Pondering Wood Flooring Installation In Your Home? Here's What You Must Know

Species and Environmental Suitability of Hardwood floors

There are many kinds of Hardwood flooring options to choose from when considering installing
wood flooring in your home. The main thing to know when choosing a solid strip or plank hardwood floor is to never forget job site suitability. The wood species of flooring to be installed should be chosen not only for its color, looks of the wood-grain, width, and length, but also for its suitability with the job site environment in which it will be installed. You may wish to learn more about all of the options available on contractors websites that specialize in Site Finished Hardwood floor Installation to guide you in making your decision before buying or installing your plank floor.
Wood floors are Recommended in:

Kitchens - Residential kitchens are fine as long as you keep your
hardwood flooring swept and clean regularly and do not have a lot of salt & dirt on your feet coming in from the outside.

Bedrooms - Living Rooms, Sitting Rooms, Family Rooms, Sun Rooms, Dining Rooms, Mudrooms (with tile inlay), Enclosed or 3 Season Porches, attics, at or above grade basements, workshops, and tool sheds.

Wood floors Not Recommended in:

Full Bathrooms

Entryways

Many people have had hard wood floors installed in bathrooms but you must take extra care to clean up any standing water as this could potentially cause damage to the planks of wood in a floor in a very short period of time that could cause you to have to sand and refinish, or even worse replace the damaged boards and then refinish.
Basement floors

Engineered products would be the only suggested product for below ground level installation due to moisture concerns.
Flooring in rooms with little or no ventilation that have a lot of moisture evaporating into the air could be result in a buckling issue.

Prior to Installation of wood flooring it is necessary to test the humidity levels of the subfloor plywood or concrete. If the subfloor has excessive moisture, then it is best to wait until they reach 6-9% humidity before starting the installation, because if the subfloor has too much moisture it will acclimatize once installed and make your new
wood floors swell up and possibly buckle under pressure

How to Clean Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring offers an inexpensive and attractive alternative to traditional hardwood flooring and tiles. While laminate flooring can replicate the look of hardwood or ceramic tiles, it can become stained or discolored over time. The following guide provides several simple tips for cleaning and maintaining your floor.

How to Clean up Loose Dirt and Debris
Never use a vacuum cleaner on laminate flooring. The roller wheels on a vacuum cleaner can can damage the flooring, leaving rubber marks that are hard to remove. In addition, the brush roller on a vacuum can create small scratches, allowing dirt and debris to embed itself in the floor.
Use a soft broom to clean. A swiffer-style cleaner can be a great way to pick up dust and other debris. A swiffer-style cleaner uses an electrostatic cloth to attract dust, preventing it from spreading around a room.

Mopping with Baking Soda

Many cleaning products can leave stains on laminate floors, creating the appearance of streaks when the floor dries. In addition, some cleaning solvents can eat away the surface of a laminate floor, ruining the appearance and increasing the chance of staining. Never use any cleaning product not designed for laminate flooring.

For tough stains, a 5-1 mixture of baking soda can provide powerful cleaning. Mix 1 part baking soda to 5 parts warm water, and stir. Apply the mixture directly to the stained area, and allow to the solution to sit for 10 minutes. Using a rag, wipe up the baking soda mixture. The stain should be lifted out of the floor, leaving a clean surface underneath. It may be necessary to rinse the area with water afterwards, as baking soda can leave a fine residue on the floor.
Mopping with Vinegar
Vinegar can be a safe and effective way to remove many stains on a laminate floor. Mix 1 part distilled vinegar to 2 parts water. Using a soft-headed mop, clean the floor in a circular pattern. Make sure to use distilled vinegar without any odor -- vinegar can impart a sour smell in a room.

Cleaning with Ammonia-Based Solutions

For tough stains, an ammonia-based cleaner can be effective on many types of laminate flooring. Ammonia is a common ingredient in many window cleaner solutions. Ammonia is effective at preventing streaking on windows; it's also effective at preventing streaking on floors.

Before using any ammonia-based cleaning solution, test the agent in a small area of flooring. It's best to use flooring that isn't visible, as some cleaning agents can damage the floor. If the ammonia-based cleaning solution is effective at cleaning a small area, it's usually safe to use on a large section of flooring.

Mix 1 part window cleaner to 1 part water, and add to a mop bucket. Clean the flooring using a soft-headed mop, and allow to dry. Ammonia may have a strong smell, so it's important to provide ventilation in an area where ammonia is being used. Never mix any ammonia product with bleach, as it can create a dangerous gas.

And there you have it, some ways to ensure your flooring, whether the most expensive or even cheap laminate flooring never has to look dirty again!

10 Laminate Flooring Installation Tips For Instant Interior Design Success

The latest click-together laminate flooring installations transform from kitchens to dining rooms and home offices into elegant, low-maintenance living areas. Engineering has progressed to such an extent that real wood grains, styles and textures are now emulated to perfection. Quality and durability have also improved and a laminate flooring installation can be guaranteed for up to thirty years.

Ten things you need to keep in mind when opting for this floor covering:

1. BestSelling Brands: This sector of the home improvement industry is growing at a phenomenal pace and a host of manufacturers are queuing for your business. There are vast collections of excellent ranges. It is difficult to determine a winner. Your choice will be a question of personal taste, the brand's unique characteristics, your decor needs and the size of your budget. Some ranges can be used in bathrooms for instance, while others are not moisture resistant to that degree.

2. Discount Discontent: Look for a quality range at a good price. Stay away from a cheap, discount
laminates that haven't been tested properly. A warranty is only as good as the backing behind it. Make sure that the company has been around for a while and won't disappear overnight.

3. Sub-Floor Surface: A major advantage of a laminate flooring installation is the fact that it can be done successfully over almost any sub-floor. Real wood, concrete and linoleum are all fine for this purpose. It may even be that linoleum can provide enough of a cushion to make an underlayment unnecessary, or you may be able to use a less expensive material. However, ask your supplier about this. In most cases you can't install the floor covering over carpeting or wood on concrete.

4. Indispensable Installation Kit: Many manufacturers have a laminate flooring installation kit available. It may be wise to make use of this. The kit can be a time-saver, ensuring that you have the right tools and accessories at your disposal during the project. The kit often includes a suitable underlayment. Check that this is of a satisfactory quality. Underlayments are a vital element when it comes to comfort. Laminates can be quite hard if you are on your feet for a long time. The padding also helps to dampen the hollow sound that is so characteristic of this type of floor covering. Of course power tools won't be included. It is often recommended that you use a circular saw to minimize chipping. Also be very careful and gentle with the tapping block or rubber mallet.

5. Barrier Basics: Find out what kind of moisture barrier you need to place on the sub-floor. This is usually specified in the warranty. The right choice will help to maintain the integrity of the floor, preventing buckling and lifting.

6. Be Warranty Wise: If you buy from a reputable company and you are given a warranty of 25 to 30 years, you can be fairly sure that you are purchasing an upper-class product. Some wholesale warehouse stores even include lifetime coverage on their lines. Read the warranty conditions with care and follow the instructions to the letter. This goes for both installation and maintenance. If you go against the guidelines, you are likely to void the protection. It is vitally important that you double check which cleaning agents are suitable.

7. Glue Grumbles: The click-together tongue and groove planks are meant to be used as a floating laminate flooring installation. In spite of this, there are still many experts who recommend the use of glue. The manufacturers don't always agree with this, as it may affect the way in which the floors contract and expand due to changes in temperature or humidity. Normally glue is only used on stairs. Glue should also be used to seal the joints between the planks in the case of a bathroom fitting.

8. Testing Tactics: In the end you have to be totally comfortable with your purchase. Test the locking mechanism in the store to make sure that it gives a tight fit, but is still easy to manage. Test samples for scratching, denting and scuffing. When it comes to indentations and moisture resistance, the density of the core is the vital component. The wear layer determines the level of resistance against fading and scratching.

9. Quantity Questions: Normally an error margin of 10% is advised when purchasing flooring. This makes provision for accidents during the laminate flooring installation, or factory faults that slipped through. Another sensible idea is to purchase extra planks to store in case you need to replace a floor section after a serious mishap. When that time comes, the particular shade may have been discontinued. Store the cartons unopened.

Check the run or lot numbers on the cartons. There are always subtle shading differences between lots. One way to even out coloring, is by working from a few boxes at the same time. In this way variations will no longer be so noticeable.

10. Clearing The Chore-Chart: These home remodeling ranges are known for their low maintenance. The smooth, hard surface is easy to keep spotless. You need only a broom and a slightly damp mop. Never wash the floor with water. There are many dedicated cleaning substances on the market for tougher spots. Abrasive cleaners and waxes are a serious no-no.

Flooring: The Foundation Of Your Design

Creativity is one of the most important elements in interior design. Until recently the steadfast rule was to choose furniture, accessories and paint first. Then almost as an afterthought, choose flooring.

Nowadays, decorators have changed their tune. They recognize that
flooring can be the centerpiece of the room and the first step in the design process. Many of the best designers and architects are choosing wood flooring over other options. Not only is wood more pleasant to walk on than laminate, tile or even carpet, it is hypoallergenic which makes it a great choice for people sensitive to dust. It’s easy to clean and durable. If well cared for, a wood floor can last for hundreds of years or more.

Whether you want your home to have an old world feel or would prefer something more modern, here’s a good guideline to follow for choosing what wood
floor to put in.

Grain

If you want the grain to stand out as a decorative element, you’ll want to select a wood that has prominent grain in it, like hickory, oak or ash flooring. Cherry, maple and eastern white pine are considered mellow flooring because their grains are less prominent.
Grade
If you want a more refined, clean look, you’ll want to use a select grade wood that has less character. To create a rustic look indicative of the floors from 150 to 200 years ago, you’ll want to go with a country grade wood that is rich in character.

Width of the Boards

Single width boards create a more formal and refined look. If you choose random width boards, you’ll get a hand-crafted, comfortable feeling in the room. The wider the plank, the more unique the room will look. Wider boards, by their very nature, have a lot more character. Character depicts the life the tree has lived and often people will want to feature the knots, mineral stains and worm holes to create focal points in the room.

Color

Most wood floors installed today retain their natural color, but stains do exist that can make them mimic more expensive materials. For example, to make an oak floor look more like walnut, you can stain it Brown. The stain selection is so vast that you can create just the color you want for your room. Plus custom stain colors can be created to perfectly match your furniture.

Tea - An Easy Way To Clean Your Wood Flooring

Here's a great tip to get a rich shine from your wood flooring. Black tea – we're afraid milk and two sugars doesn't quite work – is a great cleaning agent, as well as being cheap and environmentally sound.

The trick is in the tannic acid, which helps to bring out rich
wood colours. Simply steep 5-10 tea bags in a litre or two of boiling water for around ten minutes. This may seem like a lot, but its necessary to make a brew strong enough to clean properly. Afterwards, remove the bags and allow to cool.

You'll then need to wash the floor as usual, either with a mixture of warm water and vinegar or your normal cleaning product. It's important to never wash hardwood with hot water as this can damage the finish.

Straight afterwards, mop over the tea mixture and leave to dry. Almost immediately, you'll notice the difference with a deep, rich shine. If you like, you can buff the floor further with a dry, clean cloth.

Alternatively, the tea can be poured in a spray bottle and sprayed directly on the floor in sections. This makes an excellent furniture polish too, and is a great way to get the kids involved. As tea is non-toxic, there's no need to worry about inhaling fumes or getting damaging chemicals on sensitive skin.

Remember though, this will only work with unsweetened black tea. Flavoured and herbal teas don't have the necessary tannins, and could do more harm than good, while a brew with sugar will leave an unappealing sticky layer. It's also wise to dust mop your
wood flooring at least weekly to stop large debris from building up, which can scratch the surface when trod in.

However, if you do find deep scratches, all is not lost. Here's another good trick – after you have cleaned the floor and applied the tea solution, let it dry as normal. Then take a crayon that's a similar colour to your finish – the closer the better – and rub it into the scratch until it is filled. Then heat the damaged area with a hair drier until its blended in and leave for a moment to set. A quick buff with another clean, dry cloth and your
wood floor should be as good as new. Easy!

5 Big Issues in Architectural Commercial Flooring Design

Architectural commercial flooring design is sometimes a tough proposition. Working with a client's concepts can require producing a series of workable options, for informed choice and to get a clear picture of what the client wants. When you're working with a big area of commercial carpet, custom design and custom colourisation, you need some backup for your consultation and estimate processes.

1.Choosing concepts
As all architects are well aware, the process of choosing concepts can be hard work, particularly if you don't have ready access to visual information to show the client. How those concepts are presented is also vitally important. It's imperative to remove any possible misconceptions from the equation before there are any issues. The new design technology in custom carpets allows the client to see a computer rendition of a full installation. The consultation becomes an informed assessment of design ideas, and you can work together to investigate the possibilities.

2.Colour and design
The most sensitive design elements of any flooring design concept are colour and carpet patterns. These directly affect the overall design, and it's vitally important that architects and clients are working on the same page with their information. It's now possible to run through multiple options quickly and effectively with complete specifications available for each option. There's no guesswork and no ambiguity in the information, and decisions can be made far more efficiently.

3.Customisation options
Some designs need full customisation. This used to be a grim process of design, carpet quality definitions, and estimates. It's now a fully integrated process in manufacturing. The resulting savings in time and effort, together with standardised quality controls, make customisation quite simple and easy to achieve. Even with complex custom requirements, this is now a very straightforward procedure. Customisation of colour, design, and full specifications for floor coverings of all kinds is now just a few clicks away on your computer. This is nothing less than a godsend for architects and clients alike. Realistic, cost, and designer specified customisation is available from the start of planning.

4.Designer flooring
Designer
flooring with retail carpet, industrial carpet tiles, commercial carpet squares, and custom colour is possible in any business environment. These major design elements are easily translated into flooring specifications with basic software. This is top of the range design capacity, available when you need it. Designers can provide their clients with a complete design scenario, with options and clear methodologies for assessing designs.

5.Dealing with Manufacturers
One of the reasons for these huge improvements in design abilities was demand from manufacturers. The limitations of the restrictive design capabilities of the past were counterproductive, restrictive and outdated in the modern market.

Talk to the manufacturers direct about your designs. You'll find manufacturers well aware of the requirements of the modern design market, and receptive to design ideas and concepts. You'll get quotes, advice, and save time and money from the planning stage through to installation. Dealing with manufacturers really helps, at all stages of the design and installation processes.

Top 4 Flooring Design Ideas For Big Public Areas

Big public areas have several things in common as far as flooring is concerned. They can be very difficult to maintain, expensive, and in many cases, just plain drab. New technology and design concepts are putting an end to these problems. It's now possible to achieve a good look, a reliable hard wearing surface, and keep costs under control. A combination of commercial carpet tiles, top quality floor coverings and custom design is drastically improving the standard of public space concepts.

Flooring design for public areas- New concepts, and plenty of them

Public areas are tough design issues. They get enormous amounts of usage, and the requirements for durability and cost effective maintenance and repair are major considerations. Areas like libraries, airports, auditoriums, public buildings, and other very high volume traffic zones have been traditional administrative problems.
The new concepts are based on a fresh and inspirational approach to design and materials. Even areas in constant heavy daily use can be effectively covered with extremely durable carpets, designed to be easy to maintain, and cost efficient.

Maintenance solutions

The maintenance problem in public spaces has several facets:

Appearance

Cost
Product life
Materials quality
Accessibility and ease of maintenance and repair

You may have seen recently some ultra-modern, hardwearing carpet in public areas that looked noticeably different. This is actually a new class of carpet design, created on the "built to last" basis. These new
designs include seamless carpet tile squares with built-in backing, providing both cushioning and preserving fabric integrity. This integrated structure also improves safety and avoids seam stress fractures which can literally destroy carpets.

Modular carpet tiles, retail carpet and commercial carpet squares make maintenance easy and quick. The area can be restored almost instantly, at minimum cost and disruption to space usage. The design concepts are based on built- in efficiencies and realistic approaches to the needs of busy areas.

Cost solutions

The economics of big public areas can be managed very well, in terms of product life durability. Inferior quality
flooring is far more expensive over time, and more of a risk in terms of safety and maintenance. Top quality materials prevent a lot of wear and tear on budgets and the peace of mind on those responsible for these areas. The best industrial carpet tiles are extremely durable, and may never need any work done on them at all.

The best look, and it's your call

Perhaps the most impressive part of the flooring concepts for public areas is the ability to custom design these huge spaces. In the past, this would have been almost impossible except at great expense. Now, it's a standard design feature.

However big and busy the public area, you can do your own custom design for it, including custom colourisation. You can check out design options, patterns, and see some current working examples of custom design commercial flooring as it will look.

Flooring Design

Unlike other elements in decorating, such as wallpaper or paint colours, a floor's primary function is practical. Whatever surface or covering you choose, it must be able to withstand the rigours of daily use.

Obviously some areas of the house will take more traffic than others, hallways and corridors being prime examples, while certain rooms, such as kitchens, need floors which can be washed frequently yet will be free from any risk of tripping or slipping.

So the first consideration when choosing
flooring must be practical. This will determine whether you choose a soft or hard surface, and whether it should be one which can be easily cleaned. From there you should consider the overall look you are after. The same rules regarding patterns and colours apply as elsewhere in the house, namely that light colours, small patterns and plain surfaces make an area seem larger, while dark colours and busy patterns have the opposite effect.

Flooring
materials can be divided into two broad groups: soft and hard. The first category includes carpets, rugs and natural floor coverings, such as coir and sisal, and the hard category includes marble, stone, bricks and tiles. In addition there is vinyl, wood and cork.

Good quality carpets can be hard-wearing and they also act as good insulation, both in terms of heat and sound. However, they are more difficult to clean than a hard floor which can be mopped down, and are not waterproof, so are not good choices for a kitchen or bathroom.

Materials range from pure wool and wool-synthetic mixtures to totally synthetic. How hard-wearing they are is determined by material, density of weave and length of pile. Very dense, short pile carpets in an 80 per cent wool/20 per cent synthetic mix are very tough, as are cord carpets, which are made from goat, calf and cow hair woven into a mix of materials. All carpets need an underfelt or underlay, unless they are foam-backed.
